We are The TryHards, three students from the University of Texas at Austin. We came together because of our common love for travel, adventure and filmmaking (and Redbull). When we heard about this competition we had to apply! The first challenge we took on was deciding what the video would be about. We knew we wanted to tell a story but had no idea how to incorporate all of our unique characteristics into a minute-long video. We went with sort-of a movie trailer vibe, hoping that our viewers get so freaking hyped up that they can't physically help but vote for us. Hopefully we pulled it off!
The first member of the TryHards is Andrew Read, from Medford, NJ. Andrew studies music at UT, with an emphasis on percussion. When Andrew is not practicing music he loves camping and "tries to sleep outside at least once a week." Next, we've got Grace Foulkrod, from Austin, TX. Grace studies business at UT and has a passion for social entrepreneurship. When Grace isn't steady making deals you can find her with a camera in hand or playing around with her 3 younger sisters. Last, we've got the one and only Benji Hickerson, from Orlando, FL. Benji studies advertising at UT, but truly loves Mother Earth. If Benji is not climbing or checking out some rocks, you can find him capturing the scenery with his camera.
Hey guys I'm Andrew! I was a music major once! Other than that I like panini's, yelling, and walking on not sidewalk!
My name is Benji Hickerson and I am currently a freshman Advertising Major at the the University of Texas at Austin! I can not tell you how excited I am to be able to compete in the Red Bull Can You Make It Challenge 2018 with my good friends Grace and Andrew! The campaigning to get to the judges panel was long and hard, and definitely took me out of my comfort zone (like when I stood up in front of my 300 person class to ask everyone to go to the link in my instagram bio to vote for our team), but man did we want this, and man was it all so worth it when we got the call letting us know we had been selected by the Red Bull judges. When I say this opportunity is a dream come true, I mean that wholeheartedly.
Now a little bit about myself. I grew up in Dallas, Texas and knew for along time I wanted to come to the University of Texas at Austin for years, and as soon as I got down here, I fell in love... with the city, the school, the people, everything. It is truly one of a kind. Growing up, I don’t travel too much but I enjoyed every time I got to experience some place new. To me, the experience comes with what you make of the journey and that is exactly what I will be doing when Grace, Andrew and I set off in Europe with no phone, money or idea what the heck we're doing. One way I make the most of any trip is with my camera. I have been into photography for years now, ever since I was 12. Since then, I have improving my craft through countless hours of hiking around for the perfect (or not so perfect) shot, taking thousands upon thousands of pictures, editing them, first with iPhone apps and later with computer softwares like Photoshop or Lightroom, and even recently creating my own website to showcase my work on (hickersonphotography.net, you should check it :) ). As we head out, I cannot tell you how much I’m looking forward to the journey ahead, the memories that will last forever, and the adventure I will be telling people about for years and years to come.
Hey guys, I'm Grace! I also go by G-rod, G-rizzle, Grace Face, whatever you're feeling really, just please make it kind. Benji and Andrew tell me to shut up a lot, but in a really nice way. Apparently I let myself get bullied too much. I'm trying to work on that.
For real now. I'm studying marketing at the greatest university in the world (University of Texas at Austin) and hope to eventually work in the non-profit world, possibly serving families and children. I'm a proud Austin, TX native. I have three little sisters and incredible friends, all of whom I miss dearly right now (you know who you are). I love to tell stories, especially with my camera. One thing I am most excited for this week is getting to hear, treasure and share stories of the special people who we meet on our way.
Thank you all for making this adventure possible. I love you.
